Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo

The MacBook Pro is Apple’s top of the line laptop computer meant for the power user who needs the more capable hardware. These laptops contain faster processors, larger hard drives, and more RAM than the regular mainstream MacBooks. The MacBook Pros are also larger coming in at 15" and 17" varieties, along with the brushed steel casing, where the regular MacBooks are constructed out of hard plastic. On June 5th 2007, Apple upgraded the MacBook Pros to make use of Intel’s new Santa Rosa platform. Santa Rosa is the latest generation of Intel’s Centrino lineup which is the moniker that Intel…

Canon PowerShot A460

Decent snaps and a solid optical zoom help this digicam stand out from the budget crowd.

The chunky, 5-MP PowerShot A460 won’t fit in your pocket and feels heavy in your hand, but its 4X optical zoom and optical viewfinder help it stand out from the budget crowd. Canon also includes a manual setting for tweaking the white balance, ISO, and exposure. This digicam produced a passable snap of our colleague; however, a vase of yellow flowers looked fuzzy, with purple fringing surrounding the window in the background. Other images also appeared noisy, and when the ISO was maxed out (at 400), the A460’s photos looked especially grainy. The eight scene modes include the standard Portrait, plus more specific choices like Snow and Foliage. On the video side, the A460 records VGA footage at only 10 fps, which is fine for playback on the digicam’s LCD, but not on a TV or PC screen. Check out our photo-quality comparison gallery to see how this camera’s images compare to other affordable cameras.

nuTsie Beta

This clever service streams your iTunes wirelessly–no PC required–to a select group of cell phones, but the Web-based player is what’s more compelling for now.

Before the month is over, one of your lucky friends will pick up an iPhone, which means listening to them brag about how they now have an iPod and cell all in one. But listening to your iTunes library isn’t a capability that’s restricted to the iPhone. NuTsie, a downloadable application, lets you stream your iTunes library to your regular cell phone (view photo gallery). Rather than uploading your actual songs, nuTsie (the name is an anagram of “iTunes”) will analyze your library’s data and then match the song titles with songs it has on its servers, making the service totally legal (and free).

Dell Inspiron E1505 (Core 2 Duo)

Despite Dell’s outdated design, this notebook offers near-peak performance.

Dell’s Inspiron E1505 has been on the market forever (relatively speaking, for notebooks), but it’s still a force to be reckoned with, holding the number-one spot on two of our tests in this roundup.

Kodak EasyShare C653

Ugly camera, decent photos.

This boxy, 6.1-MP camera looks more like a toy than a piece of photography equipment. Thankfully, the photos produced by the EasyShare C653 look better than the camera itself. Featuring a 3X optical zoom, 20 scene modes, and an antishake setting, the EasyShare C653 packs some impressive features. On our tests, photos were slightly undersaturated, but colors and focus were decent. The manual setting lets you bump the ISO up to 1250 for low-light shots, but it’s buried in the menus. We recommend maxing out at 800 for the best results. While the EasyShare C653 starts up in around two seconds, there’s a three- to four-second delay between shots, which is on the slow side, and VGA video clips are captured at a low 10 fps. Check out our photo-quality comparison gallery to see how this camera’s images compare to other affordable cameras.

Acer TravelMate 6460-6263

Designed for business and personal use, the TravelMate 6460-6263 could use a better battery.

The Acer TravelMate 6460-6263 is a mainstream model aimed at business buyers. As such, it’s priced slightly higher than other entries here but includes such extras as a built-in webcam, a fingerprint reader, and Bluetooth. We just wish it had a longer battery life.

Helio Ocean

This powerful and easy-to-use messaging phone crams a tidal wave of features into a groundbreaking dual-slider design.

More than just a gadget you want to be seen carrying, the Helio Ocean is a device hipsters–and aspiring ones–will covet for its innovative dual-slider design, robust instant-messaging and e-mail capabilities, MySpace integration, and music and video playback. Being able to search contacts and conduct a Web search right from the phone’s idle screen is yet another reason to dive in. It has some issues, but the Ocean makes T-Mobile’s slow and blocky SideKick 3 look like the smart phone equivalent of a kiddy pool (view photo gallery).
